La Mariée Moderne // Styled Shoot
I feel like often women are made to feel that they can only be one thing. Girly or Athletic. Smart or Pretty. Strong or Feminine.
And the same is true for brides. I had seen so many shoots lately that are either hyper-feminine with pastel palettes and classic silhouettes, or very bold with avant-garde makeup or edgy gowns. There is absolutely nothing wrong with those shoots, in fact I’ve fallen in love with so many details from shoots exactly like those! But as I looked at them, I felt like they were missing the mark for brides who found themselves in the middle. I wanted to create a shoot for the bride who wants both, for the bride who doesn't want to be defined by just one thing.
I wanted to inspire the bride who loves black AND blush pink. For the bride who admires bold geometric patterns but doesn’t know how to incorporate them into her wedding in a subtle way. I wanted to combine the best of both worlds: feminine and bold, soft and geometric, classic and modern.
So that was where my inspiration originally came from: the modern bride.
Hence the title “La Mariée Moderne”.
The engagement ring had a vintage striated diamond setting, paired with modern hexagonal bands and matching earrings from Ah Designs. The bride’s modern nail design was done by Drift Luxury Nail Bar. We love this black and white look and think more brides should opt for a modern design like this on their day.
I loved adding the sleek yet feminine pink silk robe to the bride’s “getting ready look”. And similar to many traditional “getting ready” photos, we also decided to feature the lovely dress silhouette on a bridal hanger, featuring hand lettering by yours truly.
Her makeup was simple, soft blush lips and a subtle glow, just enough to enhance the bride’s natural beauty. Sydney Janzen was the very talented Hair & Makeup Artist. Not only did she bring my vision to life in the most beautiful way, but she was also such a sweetheart in person!
I custom-designed two graphic patterns for the shoot, and had this vision of the pattern being printed on chiffon ribbons which would be intertwined within the bride’s hair and fall softly down her back. The shots that the photographer, Megan Brittney, captured of the bride’s hair and back are some of the simplest and most beautiful moments of the whole shoot.
I chose to showcase the bride in a classic silhouette: simple, elegant, and beautiful. This stunning backless gown was from Novia Mia, a lovely bridal boutique found in downtown Calgary.
I chose to integrate black elements throughout the shoot to add an heir of elegance, sophistication, and a little boldness; the gorgeous feather coat and modern black sandal from Blondie Boutique added just enough of an edge that they complemented the geometric ribbon nicely while also contrasting with the softness of the sleek white gown.
I added even more of a modern edge by incorporating my custom black and white geometric pattern into the shoot - found in the chiffon ribbons tied in her hair and around the bouquet - a pattern which was mirrored in the silver hexagonal earrings, dangling just above the bride’s shoulder, as well as in the stunning hexagonal wedding cake.
I mean… just look at this cake! This three-tier beauty included marbled fondant and silver geometric shapes. And my favourite part was how far Tamara from Bake My Day took the colour palette… the cake she created wasn’t just black and white on the outside, but featured a cookies n’ cream cake on the inside!
Juxtaposing the black accents and bold geometric design found throughout the event, there were also an abundance of florals adorning every corner of the space. Blooms of pink and white elevated the venue to a floral haven, one which every bride dreams of for her wedding day.
Laurie from Hen & Chicks is a floral wizard, and created the most stunning ceremony floral installation! I can just imagine the incredible scene of the blush pink and white blooms surrounding a bride and groom as they exchange their vows!
This styled shoot also showcased unique ideas for signage, such as the unique seating chart and table numbers written on glass bottles, as well as a modern stationery design.
Here are a couple more pictures of the ceremony setup, because I’m obsessed with it… and I'm sure you are too.
